Disorders of the gastrointestinal system

The digestive system is made up of the oesophagus, the stomach, the small and the large intestine, the salivary glands, the liver and the pancreas. The main function of the gastrointestinal system is the effective passage of food, the digestion and absorption of its components, and the elimination of the undigested matter. Disorders of the gastrointestinal system can affect any point of the digestive tract and may be isolated or a combination of several. Common gastrointestinal disorders are gastro-oesophageal reflux, gastritis, peptic ulcer, diarrhoea, constipation, irritable bowel and inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease). The dietary guidance depends on the diagnosis. Nutrition can contribute both to the prevention and the good function of the gastrointestinal system and to the management and treatment of the symptoms.

The first concern of the Eatsmart team is to create an individualised meal plan according to the condition, so that you can enjoy every moment without being held back by any symptoms. After that comes the gradual enrichment of your meal plan, even with foods that have to be avoided at the start.
