Kidney disorders
The kidneys are the organs of the excretory system that form the main route for eliminating the products of metabolism, such as urea, uric acid and creatinine. Several diseases can affect kidney function — for example, disorders of the circulatory system such as hypertension, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, gout and abnormalities of the urinary tract (such as urinary tract infection). Some of the most common kidney disorders are nephrotic syndrome, acute renal failure, chronic renal failure and kidney stones. In cases of nephropathy, nutrition helps to manage the symptoms and must be individualised according to the type of nephropathy.
The aim is the personalised management of nephropathy according to the clinical and biochemical picture, as well as in relation to any comorbidities, since the dietary recommendations for these often come into conflict with one another.
