Nutrition across the life stages

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy is undoubtedly an extraordinarily special period in a woman’s life. It lasts about 40 weeks and involves great changes in the expectant mother’s body, aimed at the proper development of the foetus as well as her preparation for childbirth and for breastfeeding afterwards. During pregnancy, weight gain is a natural result of gestation, serving to meet the nutritional needs of both the foetus and the mother. The nutritional requirements are not the same throughout gestation, but differ in each trimester and increase even further during lactation. Energy needs, however, do NOT rise from the moment of conception, but only in the last trimester and during breastfeeding. From the moment of conception and through the first 6 months of its life, the infant depends entirely on the nutrients the mother takes in. Dietary choices therefore matter even more, since the mother must meet all the essential nutrients that she and her baby need.
